July 2005: World Masters Games, Edmonton, Canada
This was my first big Masters meet, and I was a little bit overwhelmed at first. I ended up fourth on 3m, less than two points out of second; fourth on 1m; fourth on platform; then finally won the gold medal in synchronized diving with Jan Jannink (see the video of our front twister and front 2 1/2).
Outside of the synchro event, my best dive was probably my inward 1 ½ pike on 1m. My age group was dominated on springboard by Larry Flewwelling, who represented Canada in the Seoul Olympics in 1988.
August 2005: Masters Nationals, Mission Viejo, California
Very soon after the World Masters Games, the highlight was Jan and I successfully defending our gold medal in synchro (see the video of our front twister and front 2 1/2). I didn't finish well in the other events, but in a special Grand Prix event, unique to the meet, where each diver did three dives on 1m, three on 3m and three on platform, I finished third overall against the field (men and women, all ages). I did my two best dives of the meet in that event, a forward 2 ½ tuck on 1m and back 2 ½ tuck on 3m.
April 2006: Masters Nationals, Dallas, Texas
This was the first meet in which I used forward 3 ½ tuck on 3m and back 2 ½ tuck on 5m platform (the back 2 ½ went better in practice!). I finished fourth on 1m, 3m and platform, third in mixed synchro, and second in men's synchro. I was again close to second place on 3m, but Eric Bomberger crushed the rest of us by 100 points. A couple of my best dives didn't make the video, but I did a nice back dive on 3m and front 2 ½ on 1m.
June 2006: Pre-Regionals, Stanford, California
This was a low-key local event in which Masters were included, a chance for me to try several new dives and to road-test the FINA rules with all optionals. My 3m list didn't go very well, except for back 1 ½ somersaults with 1 ½ twists that had been bugging me until then, but I dove pretty well on 1m. I got very high scores from the generous judging panel on my inward 1 ½ pike and back 1 ½ straight, and I survived my back 2 ½ tuck.
August 2006: Masters Nationals, Pasadena, California
I had a somewhat erratic meet, with some great dives and some terrible ones; with a bit less competition in my age group than usual, I finished third on 3m springboard, second on 1m springboard and platform, and won in mixed synchro with Kelsey and men's synchro with Jan. Todd Mulzet won the springboard events, and Kevin Wilson came through under pressure to beat me on platform. The disaster of the meet was Ed Richmond's injury, which kept him out of the 1m event and will keep him from diving at the World Championships. My best dives were my back 2 1/2s on 3m and 5m, back 1 1/2 straight on 1m, and new back 1 1/2 with 1 1/2 twists on 1m, plus a couple of good inward 2 1/2s on 3m and in the synchro event (video to follow).
