Upcoming Meets
August 13-16, 2006: FINA Masters World Championships, Stanford, California
Yes, I get to compete in the World Championships in my home pool! We'll have around 200 divers here from all over the world.
Schedule
Sunday morning 8/13 we'll have opening ceremonies for diving around 9:45, in which I may do one or two synchro dives with Jan, then my first event will be 3m springboard around 1:00 - this is likely to be the most exciting event to watch, though of course you never know. I get Monday 8/14 off, then on Tuesday 8/15 I'll have 1m springboard around 11:30. My platform event will be Wednesday 8/16 around 12:30. Latest schedule is at the Masters website (see links).
Directions
From 101 in Palo Alto take Embarcadero West all the way across El Camino Real. Stay in the left lane (Embarcadero becomes Galvez), and take the first left if you can onto Nelson. Go straight to park, or you can park in the lot on the right or the dirt on the left by the stadium if necessary - I don't know what the parking situation will be. Permits are not required on weekends, and they'll probably waive them during the week as well for the event.
Facilities
It's not clear yet exactly what they'll have in terms of seating or food. There are certainly areas to stand and to sit on a grassy slope, not clear if there will be bleachers, though I've heard talk that there might be. If you have a seat cushion with a back, I'd say bring it, or maybe a blanket, but they probably won't allow lawn chairs. There may be some food just outside the pool; if not, the Town & Country shopping center at El Camino and Embarcadero/Galvez has plenty of choices.
Volunteering
If you'd like to help out at the meet, by all means sign up! There are many jobs that don't require much diving-specific expertise, and people are needed all day every day. In addition to our profound appreciation, you'll get at a shirt, hat, free parking, and lunch. You can sign up at http://www.my-signup.com/2006FINAMasters/.
